Everything to Know about Manchester United vs. Tottenham: Schedule, How to Watch

Two traditional Premier League powers are looking for win Sunday to start their climb up table after disappointing starts to season.

By Ethan Sacks

Two iconic Premier League clubs off to disappointing starts to their young season face off Sunday with the hope of beginning to ascend from the middle of the table.

Eleventh-place Manchester United is on a collision course with 10th-place Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. One could gain some valuable momentum with a much needed third win in six games.

The Red Devils are coming off a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace last Saturday that featured dominant runs of play, but ultimately no decisive moment. Until veterans like Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes and rising star Alejandro Garnacho put more balls in the back of the net, there will continue to be questions surrounding the club and its manager, Erik ten Hag.

With the same aggressive tactics that brought so much praise to Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou last season called into question after a shaky start to this season, Spurs notched an impressive 3-1 win against Brentford last Saturday. The club is still smarting from the 1-0 loss to archrival Arsenal in the North London Derby a week earlier that highlighted the gap between the two teams.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham opened up their Europea League campaigns this week; but are aspiring to qualify for the more prestigious Champion’s League next year.

The match kicks off Sunday, September 29 at 11:30 a.m. ET at Old Trafford, and will be broadcast on USA Network and Telemundo.

Manchester United News: Erik ten Hag's Team Still a Work in Progress

Goals have been hard to come by for Manchester United in the early going of the Premier League with five total scored in the first five games. The days when the club boasted firepower that included the likes of Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo seem long gone. The Red Devils, though, recently showed a glimpse of what could be in a 7-0 rout of Barnsley in an English Football League Cup tilt in which the squad’s attacking talent actually scored. Of course, it helps to play against an third-division team.

In United’s first match of the Europa League tournament Wednesday, against Dutch side FC Twente, for which Hag once starred as a player, the team continued to generate more chances than results in a frustrating 1-1 tie.

Off the pitch, Manchester United unveiled designs for a proposed, cutting-edge new stadium that would seat 100,000 and cost an estimated two billion pounds. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has said the project would not be funded with public money.

Tottenham News: Heung-Min Son's Immediate Future with Club Secure

Tottenham will reportedly trigger a club option to bring back captain Heung-min Son next season, which will be the South Korean star’s 11th with the club. But the 32-year-old is apparently not thinking about his future in the navy blue and white kit beyond that.

“I’m very focused for this season. At this age, every second is like a goal,” Son said at a press conference Wednesday, a day before Tottenham’s European League opener against Qarabag FK.

Manchester United and Tottenham Stars to Watch

Tottenham: The best player on the lineup card remains Son. The forward set up two goals in the game to move into second place all time in assists in club history. Tottenham is starting to get its money’s worth with Dominik Solanke, acquired this summer for a deal that could reach $87 million. The 27-year-old English striker scored his first goal of the season last Sunday. Attacking midfielder James Maddison, last year’s big summer acquisition, also scored against Brentford – a good sign after an injury-shortened first campaign with the Spurs.

Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United goes for a kick during a match

Manchester United: Rashford is the best weapon on the club, but was left out of the starting lineup last Sunday and only has one goal in Premier League play this season. Getting the star English striker and former 30-goal scorer back on track would go a long way to energizing The Red Devils. Goalkeeper Andre Onana, who arrived in Manchester as a highly touted signing at the beginning of last season, endured an up-and-down first year with the club. Currently tied for first place in the Premiere League with three clean sheets in the first five games, the Cameroon international has given a huge boost this season. Summer addition Matthjis de Ligt is helping to tighten the defense. Garnacho’s bicycle kick for the ages last season shows the superstar potential for the Argentine prodigy.
