Ross Chastain Reveals His 'Biggest Mistake' In Past Wreck With Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch
Ross Chastain got into a wreck involving Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch at the NASCAR All-Star race at Texas Motor Speedway in May.
With the playoff race at Texas Motor Speedway behind us, Ross Chastain is thinking back to a race that happened at the same track earlier this year that resulted in a wreck involving himself, Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott.
In May 2022, Chastain was trying to pass some opponents to take a stronger position at the All-Star race at Texas Motor Speedway when he slammed into Busch’s car and launched into the air. NBC Sports reports that at one point, only his back left tire was touching the ground. When his car hit the ground, he bounced a bit before hitting the back of Elliott’s car, sending Elliott into the wall.
As a result of the crash, all three racers were eliminated and Chastain’s reputation as a driver who is responsible for more than his fair share of wrecks got a little stronger.
Speaking in a recent interview, ahead of the playoff race that saw the “Race For The Championship” drivers return to the Texas Motor Speedway where the crash took place, Chastain reflected on his role in the wreck.
“Yeah definitely watch it, study it,” he said. “Look at all, we got a ton of data from all the drivers. You can see, I just never thought since the moment I saw the fire come out of his exhaust of turn 4, that he would be coming down the track to the field, I just didn’t think that or still don’t think that.”
Chastain added: “So, I made the decision early and my biggest mistake was not reevaluating going past the restart zone, going past the start-finish line I just had in my head, I’m just gonna follow the #2 car right underneath him and Kyle was trying to get out of our way and we met there, so. [I] stand by my initial decision and I just wish I would have kept thinking and I just kind of locked in on and get to follow the #2 car behind, it was obviously the wrong decision.”
Although he’s justifying the decision, it sounds like Chastain is taking responsibility for the nasty wreck from back in May. However, Essentially Sports notes that many people are placing the blame on Busch for the wreck.
After getting loose at the corner and almost hitting the wall, he moved across a path where faster oncoming cars were coming in an effort to slow himself down. That’s where Chastain hit the back of his car and went flying.
