The Anonymous will kick off later this summer on USA Network in what will surely be a thrilling, binge-worthy, and not-at-all awkward competition series in which people are free to say whatever they want behind the safety of a mask. You may remember King from the hit documentary series Fyre Festival, which transformed the event planner into a meme sensation. Now, he’s jumping into an intriguing game of social strategy, in which players interact face-to-face in addition to playing in Anonymous Mode. With outspoken Andy on board, we can only imagine what shocking and hilarious moments are in store. The series comes from Studio Lambert, whose spectacular resume — The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge — is reason enough to check out this game of deception.
Who is Andy King?
The party planner extraordinaire is the self-proclaimed “Concierge of New York City,” who has organized events with a focus on sustainability and “zero-waste” for more than 30 years. Though he’s now based in Charleston, South Carolina, Andy is still a force to be reckoned with. He hosted a podcast called Fully Prepared With Andy King, and continues to organize parties and co-host music festivals. But one festival in particular catapulted him to unexpected stardom.
What was Andy King’s involvement in the Fyre Festival?
After disaster struck, King attempted to salvage 2017’s infamous Fyre Festival, the immersive music festival on the island of Great Exuma (previously owned by Pablo Escobar) in the Bahamas. What was supposed to be an eco-luxury experience for concertgoers went sideways fast with muddy tents, no food, and missing bands. Organizer Billy MacFarland, a young protege of Andy, defrauded investors and ticket holders out of millions of dollars and was ultimately sentenced to six years in jail.
In 2019, Netflix released a documentary titled Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened about the behind-the-scenes shenanigans, and Andy spoke out against MacFarland, practically stealing the show with unapologetic and totally deadpan quips.
How did Andy King become a meme sensation?
Threatened with a bill for $175,000 to get his trucks full of Evian water through customs, Fyre Festival organizer McFarland asked King to go to the office of the Head of Customs and… ahem, do something rather racy. Let’s just say King was asked to go above and beyond his job description. The clip of King retelling the tale in the documentary went viral and inspired so many Evian memes that the company struck up a sponsorship deal with King and introduced the slogan, “So good you’d do anything for it.”
King used his new celebrity to raise funds for the people in the Bahamas who were out of work or lost money. “If I could drive positive influences and a lot of positive energy towards social and environmental impact, then I think I can utilize this moment to do a lot of good,” he said at the time.
In 2023, King celebrated his four-year anniversary with his boyfriend, Craig McBlain. Since then, the couple has traveled the world and often shared their adventures on social media.
The Anonymous kicks off with a three-episode premiere on Monday, August 19 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on USA Network. Episodes will also air simultaneously across Bravo and SYFY on premiere night and repeat in primetime daily on USA throughout the week.
